PHS, SHS baseball receive open round byes

Six local high school teams found out their playoff fate Saturday after the CIF Central Section office released the seedings and brackets for the Valley playoffs.

Porterville, Monache, Strathmore, Lindsay and Summit Charter baseball play their playoff games on Wednesdays and Fridays while the Marauders, the only softball team to qualify, play on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For baseball, the Panthers and Spartans both have opening round byes and don’t play until Friday.

Div. II Porterville (21-5, 12-3 EYL)

After winning the East Yosemite League title, fourth-seed Porterville (21-5, 12-3 EYL) earned and opening round bye to begin the Division II Valley playoffs.

The Panthers await the winner of Wednesday’s opening round game between fifth-seed Arroyo Grande (14-12) and 12th-seed Tehachapi (13-14) to see who they’ll host Friday.

Div. IV Monache (15-12, 7-8 EYL)

Making their first playoff appearance since 2010 is fifth-seed Monache (15-12, 7-8 EYL), who host 12th seed Kingsburg (10-18) Wednesday. Against common opponents — Exeter (19-9), Central Valley Christian (13-13-1) and Liberty (18-9) — the Marauders are 2-1 and the Vikings are 2-3. Both teams lost by four runs to Liberty.

If Monache wins, they’ll face the winner of another opening round Div. IV game between fourth-seed Dos Palos (19-6) and 13th-seed Yosemite (16-12) Friday.

Div. VI  Strathmore (15-9-1, 8-4 ESL), Lindsay (9-15, 6-6 ESL), Summit (11-12, 6-2 ESL)

Three teams made it back to the Div. VI playoffs in the East Sequoia League’s third-seed Strathmore (15-9-1, 8-4 ESL) and 12th-seed Lindsay (9-15, 6-6 ESL) as well as the East Sierra League’s 10th-seed Summit Charter (11-12, 6-2 ESL).

The Spartans finished third in league and earned a bye to begin playoffs. They host the winner of Wednesday’s opening round game between sixth-seed Kennedy (10-10) and Summit. Strathmore beat Kennedy 3-0 in April and Summit 5-0, 8-4 in a doubleheader in March.

The Bears of SCCA, who finished second in league, travel for the first round game and face a Thunderbirds team that beat them 15-8 in March.

Lindsay also starts the playoffs Wednesday on the road against the Titans of Orange Cove (12-13, 5-7). If the Cardinals win, they’ll face either 13th-seed Roosevelt (8-12) or fourth-seed Riverdale (16-12) in the quarterfinals.

Div. II Monache (10-12, 7-3 EYL)

After finishing the regular season third in EYL, Monache (10-12, 7-3 EYL) softball is headed to the Div. II playoffs with the ninth seed. The Marauders travel to the eighth-seeded Apaches of Sanger (13-15) on Tuesday.

Monache and Sanger met in April during a tournament and the Marauders came out on top in a 7-2 five-inning win.

If Monache wins they’ll face top seed Kingsburg (21-5-1), who have a first-round bye, in a quarterfinal game Thursday.
