The Porterville All-Stars flag football team went 3-0 to win the Valley Championship tournament last weekend.
In the first game, Porterville beat Bakersfield Nichols 39-0. Porterville was led by D.J. Shimer and Dion Ambriz who both had multiple touchdowns. The game was highlighted by a 65-yard kickoff returned for a touchdown by Shimer, a 54-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Ambriz and a 46-yard touchdown run by Ambriz.
Porterville beat Bakersfield Eissler 24-6 in the second game. Eissler returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to start the game but that was all it had for Porterville though. The All-Stars scored 24 unanswered points to move on to the championship game. Highlights of the game was a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jax Bledsaw to Shimer, multiple interceptions by Ambriz and strong defense from Isaiah Colunga and Brenden Fielder.
In the championship game, Porterville beat a strong contender in undefeated Bakersfield Olliver 12-8. In the defensive battle, Porterville had multiple interceptions coming from Ethan Giannetto, Kevin Corrales and an amazing one-handed pick to seal the game by Gabriel Carbajal. Ambriz helped Porterville take the 12-0 lead with a 64-yard touchdown run and also had a pick-6. Olliver scored on a long touchdown pass late in the third quarter but couldn’t do much offensively for the rest of the game. The shutdown defensive front line of Colunga and Fielder, capped with defensive backs Ambriz, Shimer, Bledsaw, Giannetto and Ryan Deleon, gave little breathing room to Olliver.
Porterville will now travel to the B-Division State Championships in Pasadena on December 14 and 15. Last year, Porterville took fourth in the tournament. The only returners from last year’s team is Ambriz and coach Deegan Bledsaw. Giannetto, DeLeon and Jax Bledsaw are all returning All-Stars who moved up from last year’s C-Division team.
