SHS boys, MHS girls take second
The undefeated streak for Porterville High School boys and girls swim teams continued Wednesday with the Panthers defeating their fellow Porterville Unified School District teams in the annual Porterville City Swim Meet at Porterville High.
The Panthers won by a combined score of 1,440 points followed by Strathmore (698), Monache (674) and Granite Hills (440). The Panthers’ boys beat the Spartans 742-400 for first while the Grizzlies (221) followed in third and the Marauders (206) were fourth. Porterville girls won 698-468 over Monache while Strathmore (298) placed third and Granite Hills (219) fourth.
In the boys events, Porterville swept the relays with their 200-yard medley (1 minute, 50.80 seconds), 200 freestyle (1:37.94) and 400 free (3:45.66) relay teams placing first. On the 200 medley was Garrett Lamb, Ethan Merritt, Levi Davis, and Ryan Davis; Levi Davis, Diego Gutierrez, Isaac Gutierrez and Trevor Riley were on the 200 free; and Lamb, Riley, Ryan Davis and Diego Gutierrez on the 400 free.
Porterville took all the top spots in the 200 individual medley with Merritt (2:17.17) taking first, followed by Xavier Gutierrez (2:19.55) and Carson Wallace (2:30.22). Merritt (1:06.34) also beat out Ryan Davis (1:11.92) for first in the 100 breaststroke while SHS Cole Davin (1:18.04) was third.
In one of the closest races of the day, Riley (22.41) edged out MHS Nick Taylor (22.71) for first in the 50 free while Diego Gutierrez (23.42) slipped in for third. Riley (49.12) also came out on top in the Porterville sweep of the 100 free with Diego Gutierrez (52.47) and Isaac Gutierrez (52.93) placing second and third, respectively.
Lamb (5:29.33) won the 500 free, while PHS Dylan Wiggins (5:54.79) took second and SHS Owen Patterson (5:55.95) third. In the 100 backstroke, Lamb (1:01.14) also came out on top followed by Alex Kay (1:04.25) and Wiggins (1:08.05) in another Panther sweep.
Also winning an individual event was Levi Davis (59.35), who beat SHS Moses Bower (1:02.85) and PHS Braden Foxley (1:03.31) in the 100 butterfly.
Monache’s Ian Azevedo (2:04.48) picked up the only non-Porterville first-place finish in the 200 freestyle where he beat out Levi Davis (2:06.12) and Kay (2:11.75).
Like their boys teams, Porterville girls’ 200 medley (2:03.37), 200 free (1:48.15) and 400 free (4:03.23) relay teams swept first place. On the 200 medley was Shyanne Rainey, Johanna Scheer, Rosemary Chapman and Macy Nunez while Chapman, Samantha Rainey, Alyssa Bodoh and Claire Lee were on the 200 free. Lee, Bodoh and the Rainey twins were also on the 400 free.
For Monache, Ava Lobue, Claire Schrein, Kalina Weaver and Emily Adame led the team to a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:48.67) while Lobue, Schrein, Weaver and Addison Sampietro took second in the 400 free (4:14.88).
Rainey had two individual first-place finishes on the day. In the first, Rainey (2:08.04) beat Lobue (2:09.47) and Bodoh (2:14.64) in the 200 free. She then led the Porterville sweep of the 100 back with a time of 1:08.51 followed by Brandy Moody (1:10.84) and Emily Herrera (1:13.48).
Chapman also won her two events for the day, beating out MHS Sofia Plummer (1:16.49) and Nunez (1:19.31) for first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.03. She then led the way in the 100 free with a 58.13 finish. Lobue (59.19) and Weaver (59.33) followed Chapman in the 100 free.
Also for Porterville, Samantha Rainey (2:29.55) won the 200 IM while SHS Paulina Cemo (2:37.37) and Lee (2:37.86) placed second and third, respectively. Lee (5:41.04) also led Bodoh (5:50.70) and Samantha Rainey (5:58.63) in the Panthers’ sweep of the 500 free. In the 100 breast, Scheer (1:15.47) was the winner followed by PHS Maycee Hyder (1:24.60) and MHS Infinity Dignam (1:26.42).
The 50 free was all Monache with Adame (26.49), Weaver (27.41) and Schrein (27.80) sweeping the top spots.
