Taft College men's soccer defeated the College of the Sequoias 2-0 in a Central Valley Conference opening match Tuesday at Riverway Sports Park in Visalia.
There are nine former Orange Belt players on the COS Giants (2-5-2, 0-1 CVC) team from Porterville, Monache, Strathmore and Lindsay High School: goalkeepers Eduardo Manuel Angeles (PHS) and Damian Rodriguez (SHS); stating midfielder Kevin Barajas (PHS); defenders Axel Aldaco (MHS) and Ismael Rodriguez (MHS); midfielder/defender Issac Corona (MHS); and forward/midfielders Cesar Melgar (MHS), Rogelio Bedolla (PHS) and Julio Godoy (LHS).
Former Spartans Osvaldo Ibarra Sanchez and Enrique Gomez, are starting forwards and defenders, respectively, for the Cougars (2-5-1, 1-0 CVC).
Ibarra Sanchez is one of Taft's leading scorers with three goals in eight games. For the Giants, Melgar has two goals through eight games while Barajas, Bedolla, Godoy and Manuel Angeles have all scored a goal apiece for the team.
COS next match is at home Friday against Clovis (6-3-1, 0-0 CVC). Taft plays again next week when they host Clovis on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Lindsay High School's girls tennis defeated Strathmore 5-4 in Tuesday's East Sequoia League match at Strathmore.
The Cardinals led 4-2 after singles. No. 2 Berenice Lemus won her match 8-7 with a 7-1 tiebreaker, No. 3 Jimena Magana won 8-1, No. 4 Rufina Galvez won 8-1 and No. 6 Elizabeth Martinez won 8-6. Lindsay secured the win in doubles when No. 1 Lemus and Galvez won 8-6.
Picking up wins for the Spartans in singles was No. 1 Neha Reddy (8-0) and No. 5 Lena Bennett (8-2). In doubles, No. 2 Taylor Simonich and her partner won 8-2 while No. 3 Sara Costa and Amanda Garcia won 8-7 with a 7-3 tiebreaker win.
Tulare Western 311
Monache High School girls golf defeated Tulare Western 309-311 in an East Yosemite League match Tuesday at River Island Country Club.
Scoring for the Marauders was Adriana Castro (50), Kere Martinez (64), Leslie Lopez (62), Paola Lopez (68) and Alondra Garcia (65).
“Adriana Castro had a really nice round to lead all golfers with a season best 50,” MHS head coach Jake Winter said. “Leslie Lopez is staying consistent with a 62. It was a little rough going after that but the girls were able to hang on for the win. We knew it was going to be close, that was a little too close. We will need to tighten up and get below 300 to beat Porterville Thursday.”
The young group of Marauders are now 3-1 in EYL.
Porterville High School's girls golf defeated Delano 265-301 in Tuesday's East Yosemite League match on the road.
For the Panthers, Angela Eugene shot a 48, Uniese Carrilo a 52, Gemma Gasco a 49, Aunika Marquez a 51, Macy Behrens a 68 and Alexis Gonzales a 65.
“Overall I’m still seeing improvement with the girls,” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “Thursday will be a very hard match against Monache.”
LHS second, SHS third in ESL trny
Sierra Pacific High School girls golf won Monday's East Sequoia League nine-hole tournament at Porterville Municipal Golf Course. Sierra Pacific shot 257 for the win followed by Lindsay (279) in second and Strathmore (286) third.
Natalie Felix shot a 50 to lead the Cardinals. Lizeth Garcia and Bianca Centeno both shot a 59, Cayli Carrillo a 56 and Klaryssa Perez a 55.
The Spartans' Anushka Larson's 45 tied with Sierra Pacific's Sam Coons for the match's lowest score. Also for Strathmore, Kylia May shot a 53, Kambria Rohrbach a 57, Noemi Villalobos a 64 and Fatim Chaves a 67.
Granite Hills did not score as a team but Vannessa Prado shot a 68 and Reilly Crowder a 67.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Mission Oak 12
Strathmore High School girls water polo lost 12-11 in overtime to Mission Oak in Monday's East Sequoia League game on the road. The Hawks' Sarah Mancebo scored the winning goal.
The Spartans' Kylee Blackwell had three goals, one assist and one steal. Faith Wynn had three goals. Paulina Cemo had three goals, eight steals and two assists. Sidney Hartsell had three assists and two steals. Isabel Burrough had two goals and one assist. In the cage, Faith Karjala had three saves and Yazmyn Sanchez had seven saves and one assist.
BOYS WATER POLO
Mission Oak 4
Strathmore High School boys water polo defeated Mission Oak 27-4 in Monday's East Sequoia League game on the road.
Owen Patterson led the Spartans with five goals and also had two steals and an assist. Jacob Watson had four goals, three steals and one assist. Cole Davin had four goals. Gabe Bower had three goals and led the team in steals (six) and assists (three). Cyrus Hill had three goals, two assists and two steals. Lucas Wilkinson had three goals and one assist. Jalen Manivanh had two goals, one assist and two steals. Goalkeeper Max Dieterle had one goal and four saves.
Tulare Union 1
Porterville High School volleyball defeated Tulare Union 3-1 in Monday's East Yosemite League match on the road. The Panthers won the first set 25-23, lost the second 25-21, then won the last two 25-10 and 28-26.
Summit Charter 3
Kings Christian 1
Summit Charter Collegiate Academy defeated Lemoore's Kings Christian 3-1 in Monday's East Sierra League match at home. The Bears won the first set 25-22 but lost the second 26-24. They won the next two 25-15 and 25-16, respectively.
For the Bears, Emily Efseaff had 13 kills and three blocks. Ayanna Monjaras had four kills. Genesis Torres had five kills and three blocks. Talia Vazquez had 17 digs.
Summit Charter is now 3-2 through the first half of league and host Wonderful Prep tonight in another ESL match.
