Strathmore High School baseball picked up a solid win Friday with a 15-0 shutout of Laton in their non-league game at home.

On the bump, William Reece allowed no hits through five innings and struck out 10 hitters. Offensively, Reece also had two hits, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Josue “Jackie” Topete had a great day at the plate and launched the team’s first home run of the season. He also had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs. Angel Topete, Josue’s younger brother, also had a big day with three hits and three RBIs.

Matt Brown & Taylor Lollis finished with two hits.

The Spartans play Kennedy on Tuesday at Strathmore.


Pirates qualify for state

Porterville College women’s tennis player, No. 1 Claire Nuno, qualified for the CCCAA State Championships in both singles and doubles after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Big 8 Conference Championships Thursday.

Nuno’s partner for doubles, is No. 2 Eileen Counihan-Rooney.

The two did not play in Friday’s portion of the conference tournament due to it being rained out.

The state tournament is on April 25-28 at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.

Porterville College softball is on a seven-game win streak after defeating Fresno 6-5 in extra innings on the road in Thursday’s Central Valley Conference game.

Tied 5-5 after seven innings, Raquel Gonzalez hit an RBI-single to bring Kassy Cervantes in as the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning. 

Both Annisa Gomez and Shante Gutierrez finished with home runs, and Gutierrez was a three-run home run. Gonzalez and Kuea Angilau both went 2-for-4.

Alexis Rodriguez and Ashley Eyraud shared time on the mound with Rodriguez going three innings with three runs on five hits and two walks. Eyraud pitched five innings with two runs on five hits. Both pitchers had a strikeout apiece.

Porterville High School softball scored 13 runs in the second inning alone, in the Panthers’ 16-0 shutout of Delano in Thursday’s East Yosemite League game on the road.

Mariah Castanon went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Madison Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Uniese Carrillo and Jennilu Martinez each went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Martinez also had three RBIs and Carrilo had two.

In the circle, Johnson went three innings with no runs on three hits and five strikeouts. Martinez pitched two innings, where she allowed one hit and no runs but had three strikeouts.
