The Porterville College women’s tennis team picked swept Sacramento City 9-0 in both matches of a Big 8 South Conference doubleheader Thursday at home.

In the first match No. 1 Claire Nuno won 8-3 in singles, No. 2 Eileen Counihan-Rooney won 8-1, No. 3 Raquel Calo won 8-0 and No. 4 Neelam Aziz won 8-0. For doubles, No. 1 Nuno and Counihan-Rooney won 8-2 while No. 2 Calo and Zoe Vasquez won 8-2.

In singles of the second match, No. 1 Nuno won 8-0, No. 2 Counihan-Rooney won 8-3, No. 3 Calo won 8-0 and No. 4 Aziz won 8-0. For double’s No. 1 Nuno and Counihan-Rooney won 8-6 and No. 2 Aziz and Vasquez won 8-0. 

Due to a lack of players, the Panthers forfeited both their No. 5 and No. 6 singles’ matches, as well as their two No. 3 doubles’ match in the doubleheader.

The Lady Pirates are now 3-2 in conference play and host Modesto today at 1 p.m.


Strathmore 5

Orange Cove 2

Strathmore High School baseball defeated Orange Cove 5-2 Thursday on the road in a non-league game.

In a bullpen game, the Spartans came up big with Aidan Jackson (three innings pitched), Matt Brown (two innings) and John Leal (three innings). Leal came away with the win while Jackson struck out five and gave up just one hit.  

At the plate, William Reece had two hits, a RBI and a run scored. Angel Topete also had a hit, a RBI and a run scored. Rigo Alvarez finished with two hits.

Strathmore open league play at Corcoran today and then play a doubleheader versus Summit Charter at home on Saturday. First game is at 12 p.m.

In the junior varsity game, Strathmore defeated Orange Cove 9-5 with sophomore Juan Ramirez striking out a JV school-record 15 batters.


Porterville 6

Tulare Western 3

Porterville High School boys tennis defeated Tulare Western 6-3 in Thursday’s East Yosemite League match on the road.

In singles No. 3 Joseph Catalina won 6-4, 6-1; No. 4 Roman Ayon won 6-0, 6-0; and No. 5 Derek Perez won 6-3, 6-4.

The Panthers’ swept the doubles for the win. The No. 1 duo of Catalina and Juan Cerros won 8-3, No. 2 Ayon and Adrian Remigio won 8-3 and No. 3 Nate Prieto and Landon Sharp won 8-1.

Porterville is now 2-0 in EYL with a match at home against Tulare Union on Monday.
