The Porterville College women’s tennis team defeated Reedley 7-2 at home in Friday’s Big 8 South Conference match.
In singles, No. 2 Eileen Counihan-Rooney won 6-4, 6-1; No. 2 Raquel Calo won 7-6, 6-4; No. 4 Viviana Meza won 6-0, 6-0; No. 5 Neelam Aziz won 6-3, 6-4; and No. 6 Vanessa Chavez won 6-0, 6-0.
For doubles, No. 2 Calo and Aziz won 8-4 while No. 3 Meza and Chavez won 8-0.
Porterville travels to Bakersfield College tomorrow for another Big 8 South Conference match.
On Thursday, the Pirates lost 8-1 to undefeated, conference leader Fresno City.
After losing her first set 6-3, No. 3 Meza came back to get the team’s lone win. Meza won the second set 6-0 and the tiebreaker 10-8.
Porterville College went eight innings with Reedley in a 5-4 Central Valley Conference loss Thursday at home. The Tigers (18-3, 5-1 CVC) are ranked sixth in the state.
The Lady Pirates’ Alexis Rodriguez took the loss on the mound after giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. Rodriguez also retired two.
Porterville (10-6, 2-2 CVC) had eight hits with Kuea Angilau going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Chelsea Ramos was 1-for-3 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and a run scored. Shantae Gutierrez and Annisa Gomez also had a double apiece for their only hits of the day. Auzia Mosley went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored two runs.
Mission Oak 278
Porterville High School boys golf opened East Yosemite League play with a 244-278 win over Mission Oak Thursday at River Island Country Club.
Parker Jones had an excellent day, shooting two over par to card a 38. Ethan Standridge finished with a 48, Tyler Jones shot a 52, Adam Daguman a 53, Jayden Gammon a 52 and Tony Fusco a 58.
“I am grateful for all the rain but we missed several days of practice because of it,” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “Overall I am optimistic about our season. We have a great, hardworking team that will improve week to week.
PHS sweeps TWHS, DHS
Porterville High School girls and boys swim and dive teams defeated Tulare Western and Delano in Thursday’s East Yosemite League tri-meet at home.
The Panther girls beat the Mustangs 121-62 and the boys beat them 95-75. The Tigers did not bring a girls team and had a small boys team, whom Porterville beat 140-5.
For the girls, Porterville won all three relays: 200-yard medley (2 minutes, 0.11 seconds), 200 freestyle (1:50.77) and the 400 free. On the 200 medley team was Shyanne Rainey, Johanna Scheer, Rosemary Chapman and Samantha Rainey. Chapman, Scheer, Emily Herrera and Claire Lee made up the 200 free team while Lee, Herrera and the Rainey twins were on the 400 free team.
Individually, Shyanne Rainey won the 100 free (56.69) and 100 backstroke (1:09.5), Samantha Rainey the 200 free (2:18.90), Chapman the 200 individual medley (2:27.51) and Lee won the 500 free (5:47.54).
Porterville also swept all three relays, winning the 200 medley in 1:48.34, the 200 free in 1:38.45 and the 400 free in 3:40.73. On the 200 medley was Garrett Lamb, Ethan Merritt, Ryan Davis and Levi Davis while Lamb, Ryan Davis, Hunter Conrad and Trevor Riley were on the 400 free. Merritt, Conrad, Riley and Levi Davis were also on the 200 free.
Individually, Riley won the 200 free (2:02.02) and 100 free (50.59), Lamb won the 500 free (5:33.43) and 100 back (1:01.89), and Merritt won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.97).
Strathmore High School boys tennis beat Lindsay 6-3 in an East Sequoia League match at home Thursday.
The Spartans were tied 3-3 after singles but swept the doubles matches for the win. In doubles, No. 1 Junior Campos and Heriberto Vasquez won 8-4, No. 2 Jorge Prado and Jose Lara won 8-4 and No. 3 Matt Nanlangka and Sal Campos won 8-2.
For singles, No. 2 Prado won 8-4, No. 4 Lara won 8-6 and No. 5 Jorge Ambriz won 8-5.
The Cardinals picked up wins in the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles. No. 1 Gilbert Gutterrez won a set 8-7 and then the tiebreaker 7-1. No. 3 Brulio Mena won 8-4 and No. 6 Angel Lopez won a set 8-7 and the tiebreaker set 7-3.
Strathmore also defeated Granite Hills 8-1 on Monday.
WH Coalinga 8
Porterville College baseball lost 8-7 to West Hills Coalinga Thursday in a Central Valley Conference game on the road. The Pirates (1-21, 0-5 CVC) tied the game 7-all with a three-run half inning in the top of the ninth, but the Falcons (3-19, 2-3 CVC) scored in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off.
Matt Cox took the loss after going 1 1/3 innings with three runs allowed on three hits and one walk. He also had two strikeouts. Alfredo Vasquez got the start and went seven innings with five runs on 12 hits and no walks. Vasquez retired three batters as well.
At the plate, Brandon Dodd went 3-for-4 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Jacobe Vargas was 4-for-5 with a walk and a RBI.
