After a sluggish first quarter and six missed layups, top-seeded Strathmore High School girls basketball pulled away from the 16th-seeded Eagles of Firebaugh for a 56-26 victory in Wednesday's CIF Central Section Division V opening-round game at home.

Jazmine Soto led the Spartans with 26 points, 10 steals and five rebounds. Yvette Gutierrez had a career-high 23 points with three rebounds and three steals.

Next opponent for the Spartans is Wonderful College Prep of Delano. Strathmore hosts the quarterfinal game Friday night at 7 p.m. at Spartan Gym.

St. Joseph 30

Top-seeded Porterville High School girls basketball defeated 16th-seed St. Joseph 79-30 in Wednesday's CIF Central Section Division III opening-round game at home.

Jazlynne Medrano led the Panthers with 30 points. Madison Johnson contibuted 12 and Nseije Ortiz had 11.

On Friday, Porterville hosts ninth-seed Fresno in a quarterfinal game at home.

Porterville High School boys tennis swept Lindsay 9-0 at home in a non-conference match Wednesday.

In singles, No. 1 Juan Cerros, No. 2 Derek Perez, No. 3 Anthony Chavez and No. 5 Adam Taghzout all won 6-0, 6-0. No. 4 Brandon Rose won 6-0, 6-1 and No. 6 Jason Thao won 6-1, 6-0.

In dobules, No. 1 Cerros and Perez, No. 2 Chavez and Rose, and No. 2 Rojas and Barajas all woo 8-0.

Porterville plays Bakersfield High today.
