Strathmore's Larson, Lindsay's Felix Area-bound in golf

Lindsay High School girls tennis is sending a player to the Central Section Central Area Championship tournament for the first time since 2013.

The six-year absence of the Cardinals at Area ended Monday, when sixth-seeded Berenice Lemus upset third-seeded Neha Reddy of Strathmore in a quarterfinal match of the East Sequoia League Championships. Lemus defeated Granite Hills' Valeria Galvez 8-0 to advance to the quarterfinal match.

Towards the end of the match, Lemus led 7-5 but Reddy came back to win the next two games and send the set to a tiebreaker, where Lemus won 8-6 and secured the area-qualifying victory.

“It was super intense,” Lemus said. “Like she was the No. 1 and last time I didn’t even play her for our team cause I’m No. 3. So when I saw I was going to play her, I was like, ‘I’m so dead.' But I don’t know. I just kept coming back. I’m like, ‘She’s not going to win.’ I didn’t let myself slow down. I didn’t let her get those shots. And I was just fighting through it.”

She added, “I wanted to make it to Area. It was the first time, in a long time, that anyone from Lindsay makes it. So yeah, so many feelings.”

Also qualifying for Area with a quarterfinal win was Granite Hills' sixth-seeded, Leelu Amparano and Deissy Vargas. The duo defeated Lindsay's Daisy Lemus and Evelyn Flores 8-2 in round of 16, then upset third-seeded Corcoran's Ivanna Lozoya and Dianna Alvarado 8-1.

The ESL championships continue today with the semifinal and final rounds. Still in the mix to qualify for Area by placing fifth or sixth are Strathmore's seventh-seeded Abby Miller and Lindsay's fourth-seeded Rufina Galvez in singles, while the Spartans' fourth-seeded Hennasey Mendoza and Taylor Simonich have a chance in doubles.
