Nine boys tennis players from Porterville and Monache High School advanced to the CIF Central Section Central Area tournament after placing in the top six at Saturday’s East Yosemite League championship finals hosted by Delano High School.

The Panthers’ Juan Cerros and Joseph Catalina defended their EYL doubles title by beating the Marauders’ Josue Orozco and Jake Buckley 6-1, 6-0 in the finals. Porterville’s third-seeded team of Adrian Remigio and Roman Ayon defualted their semifinal match to Orozco and Buckley due to a family emergency and finished fourth. Monache’s Johnny Hu and Nick Nuno took fifth.

In singles, the Marauders’ Angel Chavez placed sixth and will advance to area along with the eight doubles players.

The Central Area tournament is on April 26-27 at Delano High School.


Dos Palos 9

Strathmore 8

Strathmore High School baseball lost 9-8 to Dos Palos in a tournament game Saturday at Woodlake High School. 

After leading 8-5 through the first four innings, the Spartans gave up four runs in the fourth and were unable to score anymore themselves for the rest of the game.

Jaylen Oats took the loss on the mound after coming in as a reliever and allowing five runs, three of them earned, in one inning. Josue Topete started the game, going three innings, and gave up three runs on two hits. William Reece closed with two strikeouts in one inning.

Angel Topete was the Spartans top hitter after going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Oats went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. John Leal had a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Josue Topete also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
