Stroemer's walk-off sends Madera to state
Madera National All-Stars booked their ticket to next week's state tournament with a 6-5 ninth-inning walkoff against Porterville in Sunday's winner-take-all Little League 12s California Section 7 Championship at Burton Ballfields.
Tied 3-all after the regulation six innings, Porterville struck first in top of the ninth with Colton Isom and Xavier Aguilera scoring on a wild pitch to take a 5-3 lead.
Madera answered in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run RBI-double from Joel Arellano. Then up to bat came Thursday's hero, Paul Stroemer, who had the walk-off RBI in Madera's 3-2 win over Porterville in the teams' first meeting.
“Do it again, Paul!,” was the call from his teammates.
Once again, Stroemer proved clutch with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field — the same spot as Thursday — to win the game.
Aeden Dowdy took the loss on the mound for Porterville after going 4 1/3 innings with five runs on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts in relief.
Luis Torres got the start for Porterville and went four innings with one run on three hits, four walks and nine strikeouts. He was also the game's top hitter after going 3 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Isaiah Sanchez was the winning pitcher for Madera. In relief, Sanchez allowed two runs on one hit, four walks and five strikeouts.
Porterville forced Sunday’s winner-take-all championship game with three home runs and more in Saturday’s 9-1 win over Madera National.
It was a pitchers’ duel through the first two innings but Porterville broke through and scored in every following inning.
Two home runs came in the top of the third after Wyatt Mauldin scored on a wild pitch during Colton Isom’s at-bat. Isom battled through eight pitches before sending the ninth over center field fence for a two-run home run that also brought in Jose Perez. Isom’s homer was followed by a nearly identical one from Horacio Nunez that also went over the center field fence.
Up 4-0, Porterville gave up one run in the bottom of the third then tacked on two more runs on a two-run, inside-the-park home run from Thomas Presley to go up 6-1 in the fourth.
A sacrifice bunt from Xavier Aguilera scored another run in the fifth while Isom had an RBI-single and Giovanni Perez scored on an error for the final two runs in the sixth.
Nunez was the winning pitcher after allowing one run on eight hits, no walks and seven strikeouts through six innings. He also went 2 for 4 with a home run.
Isom was the team’s top hitter, going 3 for 3 with three RBIs, a home run, a double and two runs scored. Presley also had a home run and two RBIs, Aeden Dowdy had a double and Giovanni Perez was 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.
