Granite Hills High School’s Shane Christie competed at the 59th annual Redwood Invitational hosted by Redwood High School in Visalia on Saturday, Jan. 11.
He dominated all opponents en route to the 170-pound gold medal match.
Leading up to the championship match, Christie pinned Noe Reyes of Pioneer Valley in 30 seconds and Gabriel Alvarado of Parlier in 5:21. He also pinned Aiden Melvin of Clovis North.
Christie had a tall order in the final against 2019 CIF State medalist Nico Zavala of Mission Oak. Last March, Zavala placed fifth in state at 160 pounds. He’s currently ranked seventh in the state.
There was a lot of hand finding in the first round with Zavala scoring a takedown late in the period to take a 2-0 lead to start the second period. Zavala escaped, followed by a takedown and near fall. Not content go down without a fight, Christie scored a nice double leg takedown in the third but Zavala was able to pick up a reversal to take the victory by a regular decision score of 11-4.
“It was pleasing to see Shane fight off his back in the second period and pick up two scores in the second half of the match, and not be taken lightly,” GHHS head coach Marty Kouyoumtjian said.
