Whenever Strathmore High football team has been challenged this season it has always had somebody to answer the call. On Saturday, it was Christian Onsurez.
Onsurez scored five touchdowns to help the Spartans (7-0, 2-0) pull away for a 49-33 win against Sierra Pacific in Hanford. Strathmore pulled away in the second half after the game was tied 21-21 at halftime.
Onsurez rushed for 163 yards on 21 carries while Carlos Moreno ran for 130 yards and a TD on 19 carries for SHS.
Moreno scored on a 5-yard run to give Strathmore a 7-0 lead. Manuel Andrade then intercepted a pass to set up a scoring chance at the Golden Bears 6-yard line. Onsurez went on to score on a 3-yard run to give SHS a 14-0 lead.
Onsurez added a 10-yard scoring run to give the Spartans a 21-7 advantage. Strathmore eventually took control in the second half, with Trace Pugh completing a 20-yard scoring pass to Onsurez. Avi Sharma added the extra point to give Strathmore a 28-21 lead.
Onsurez then broke free for a 58-yard TD run to make it 35-21. Strathmore was still clinging to a 35-27 lead in the fourth quarter when Andre Bravo intercepted a pass. That set up an 18-yard scoring run by Onsurez to make it 42-27.
After an Isaac Holterman interception, Christian Rodriguez scored on a 2-yard run to give SHS a 49-27 lead.
