There are many reasons to offer up a cheer this week. Here are a few.

> Burton School District’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren group, for giving away more than 200 backpacks full of school supplies at their third annual giveaway event. Not only are they offering a hand to Porterville families in need, they once again made it a fun event for the whole family.

Alta Vista School District for committing to technology access for their students. The small school district  on the east side of Porterville purchased 350 new Chromebooks over the summer, and they now have enough devices to put one in the hands of each of its students for the upcoming school year.

The Porterville Little League baseball and fast pitch softball teams who advanced to state tournaments in their respective age groups. Even though the run has already ended for some of you, we were cheering for you the whole way, and your commitment to athletic excellence and your character make all of Porterville proud.

> The brave men and women of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and Porterville Police Department, for their work on several cases this week that make Porterville and surrounding communities a safer and healthier place to live and raise our children.

> The City of  Porterville for officially completing the Jaye Street Bridge Widening Project. After 15 years of planning adn two years of construction, the end result is a nice new look and a more convenient route for both drivers and pedestrians.

> Lastly, a very big cheers to Monache High School senior Brandon Ennis, who recently qualified for the national twirling team and will be competing against the best in the world next month in Florida. Brandon has only been twirling competitively for four years, but he already has the talent and determination of a superstar. Porterville is cheering for you.
