There are many reasons to offer up a cheer this week. Below are a few.

>Tulare County Sheriff’s Department for handing out its STAR awards to Michael Correia of Porterville and Carlos Martinez of Visalia. Both men pulled over to help someone in need.

>Everyone who donated to CASA’s Fill a U-Haul Truck with Toys event that was sponsored by local U-Haul owners Stephanie and Leo Cortez.

>All of the volunteers and parade entries that made the annual Children’s Christmas Parade in Porterville a success. The event is organized each year by Porterville Rotary, Porterville Chamber of Commerce and the City of Porterville.

>Strathmore High School football team for winning its state play-in game, a dramatic 53-52 win over Hilmar in double overtime. The undefeated Spartans advanced to the 6-AA Northern California Regional and will play St. Patrick-St. Vincent today at Spartan Stadium. The two teams met in the 6-A state final a year ago with the Bruins edging the Spartans.

>House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy for continuing to hold monthly mobile offices in Porterville so his constituents can voice their concerns and kudos.

>Porterville Police Department for its work in arresting three people believed to have been responsible for a string of armed robberies in the city and the county. 

>The 13 girls from local high schools who earned a spot on the All-Valley water polo team including first-teamers: Dalanie Beardsley, Raeleen Jensen and Emily Chapman of Monache, and Rosemary Chapman and Shyanne Rainey of Porterville. 

>Myers Funeral and Cremation Service for once again organizing and hosting the 23rd annual Memorial Tree Service.
