On November 12, at 6:30 p.m., Porterville Police Department Officers responded to Applegate’s Market, located at 212 N. Newcomb Street regarding an erratic female, later identified as Brandy Whittenburg, 40, that was possibly intoxicated and driving a vehicle with children. While responding, Officers were provided with the description of the suspect vehicle that was attempting to flee the scene and had struck stationary barriers in front of the business. When Officers arrived they located the suspect vehicle and Whittenburg in the parking lot of Applegate’s Market. Several citizens had already intervened by removing the children and car keys and keeping Whittenburg at bay until the officers arrived.
During the investigation, Officers determined Whittenburg was driving under the Influence of alcohol while caring for her two small children, ages 6 months and 2 years. Whittenburg was taken into custody without incident however during the booking process she assaulted an Officer. Neither the officer, suspect nor children were injured during this incident. The two children were turned over to Tulare County Welfare Services.
Whittenburg was later booked at the Tulare County Sheriff’s South County Detention Center and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
