On the third anniversary of Cpl. Jared C Verbeek’s death in Afghanistan, approximately 100 people attended the dedication and renaming of the Giddings Bridge in Visalia in his honor.

The renaming of the bridge required the efforts of many, but mostly Andrew MacDonald, Norbie Lara, and Assemblywoman Connie Conway.

It was Conway who authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution 129 which designates the S. Giddings Avenue overcross on Highway 198 as the Corporal Jared Verbeek Memorial Overcrossing.

Conway attended and spoke at the dedication.

The young soldier from Visalia was killed in the line of duty on June 21,2001. He is survived by his wife Vanessa and son Jacob, his parents and numerous relatives in Tulare County.

Jared Verbeek is a second generation Marine and fourth generation veteran. Every branch of the military has been represented by a member of his family.

The family reminds people of the Wounded Warriors Golf Tournament on July 18. It will be the third annual Wounded Warrior Golf tournament in Jared Verbeek’s honor.
