Porterville was pretty shaken up, literally, on Independence Day.
The area felt a strong shaking for about 30 seconds shortly after 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning as a result of a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that shook southwest Searles Valley about 10 miles north of Ridgecrest. The U.S. Geological Survey stated the earthquake could be felt as far as Mexico. The earthquake was also felt as far as North Las Vegas. The earthquake was at a depth of 8.7 kilometers.
Besides the earthquake that measured 6.4, there were several other earthquakes in the Ridgecrest-Searls Valley area between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. That measured between 4.0 and 4.7.
An average of 25 earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 occur per year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.
