Please join employees on the Sequoia National Forest from Noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, August 9 to celebrate the 75th birthday of Smokey Bear.

Those near Porterville can come to the headquarters of Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument, located at 1839 S. Newcomb (near the Porterville airport.) For those closer to Kernville, a celebration is taking place at the Kern River Ranger District Office, 11380 Kernville Road.

Forest personnel will offer tips on how to clear around your home to protect it from wildfires. Children can learn fire safety and young adults can learn what it takes to become a firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service. These events are free.

Smokey Bear is a beloved and trusted American icon that has been educating the public on wildfire prevention since 1944. Smokey Bear rewards, celebrates, and encourages people to take it upon themselves to prevent wildfires.
