On Sunday night, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Tulare Police Department received a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.
The victims reported they were in the 600 block of South Q Street when they were robbed at gun point by at least three masked suspects, two of which were armed. Victims advised one of the suspects was armed with a rifle. The suspects took property from the victims and left on foot. The victims followed the suspects in their vehicle and called 911.
The on duty sergeant was first to arrive in the area and contacted a suspect who matched the description and detained him without incident. The sergeant saw the victims following a second suspect and alerted responding officers via radio. Two officers arrived and located the suspect and attempted contact with him. The suspect was still in possession of the rifle and refused to cooperate. Shots were fired and the suspect was struck in the leg. The officers immediately secured the firearm and the suspect and began rendering first aid until EMS arrived.
The suspect that was shot, Ivan Lopez, 21, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released to officers for booking at the department.
The second suspect, Emmanuel Martinez, 19, was identified as being involved and also booked and interviewed at the department.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office was asked to conduct the investigation. They responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
Per policy, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office investigation.
