Friday Roundup: EYL foes top Grizzlies, Marauders

Granite Hills 16, Tulare Union 55

Granite Hills trailed just 14-8 early in the second quarter of their game at Tulare Union Friday night before Tulare erupted for 30 points to make it 44-8 at the half and eventually closed out the Grizzlies, 55-16.

Granite’s Tony Trujillo scampered for 21 yards in the first quarter for a touchdown, which was followed by a two-point conversion pass to Felipe Andrade.

Trujillo would score a second touchdown in the game’s closing minutes on a 19-yard counter run, only this time Gavino Panuco scored the ensuing two points.

Somewhere in the middle, Grizzlies coach Gary Stoddard lost some key starters to injury, including running back Andrew Priego, who was taken to the hospital for an injured elbow. Andrade sprained his ankle and sat out the second half.

Meanwhile, Granite falls to 0-6 on the season.

“We just haven’t had a break in our schedule,” Stoddard said. “We played Monache tough, though, and I think the next four games will be more competitive for us.”

The Redskins’ star running back, Jontell Reedom, scored six touchdowns against the Grizzlies, bringing his totals to 19 with well over 1,000 yards rushing on the season.

“He was fantastic,” Stoddard said. “He’s well on his way to Division I football.”

Granite next turns its attention to a struggling Cesar Chavez squad in Week 6 play.

Monache 13, Delano 20

Monache owned a 13-0 lead over Delano Friday night in Porterville until the Tigers scored just before the half.

Delano would go on to score in the third and again in the fourth to top the Marauders, 20-13.

Sebastian Alcantar returned a blocked punt for a 65-yard score in the first quarter to give Monache the lead. Pablo Martinez then connected with Josh Davis for a 17-yard pass in the end zone for their second touchdown.

“We played well in the first half and forced three turnovers,” Monache coach Chris Likewise said. “We just couldn’t convert on several passes into the end zone.”
