There are many reasons to offer up a cheer this week. Below are a few.

The nine local residents named to the 2013 Porterville Leadership class. They are Chris Craig, Josie Chapman, Enoth Kim, Michael Knight, Maria Mena, Jamie McGlasson, Maria Padilla-Leon, Jenna Salazar and Jon Zimmerman.

Jennifer Borror-Gilliam, one of three Porterville College former athletes who will be inducted into the PC Hall of Fame.

Deonna Moore, a former Monache athletic standout, who has been named to the Abilene Christian University all-time women’s basketball team.

Granite Hills High School boys basketball, Monache boys soccer, Lindsay girls basketball and Lindsay boys basketball, and Monache girls basketball teams that have all advanced in their respective divisions in the Valley playoffs. Monache boys soccer plays for the Valley championship tonight. Good luck.

Monache graduate and Porterville native Ann Newman who will have her film, “Wade Krause: Pinball Artist,” shown as the Cinequest Film Festival.

Local girls Breanna York, Hanna Risvold and McKenzi Blue who will vie for the title of Miss Tulare County or Miss Central Valley at the pageant on March 2 in Visalia. Good luck to all.

The Porterville United 14-and-under boys soccer team that won the championship at the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup.

Bartlett Middle School students who are collecting pennies to make a donation to the Leukemia Society.

Porterville’s Sylvia Vasquez, who made it on to the “Lets Make a Deal” television game show.

Porterville native Patricia Thompson, who has been named state president of the Concerned Women for America, a conservative women’s advocacy group.

Monache freshman FFA member Catarina Alvarado, who earned a blue FFA jacket from Tulare County Farm Bureau.

Local high school wrestlers Mason Pengilly and Martin Sandoval, both of Porterville High, who won titles in their respective weight classes at last week’s Yosemite Division meet.

William Mauk of Porterville, who was sworn in as a California Highway Patrol office recently.
