There are many reasons to offer up a cheer this week. Below are a few.

Porterville High’s water polo standout Matlyn Morris who has been chosen to receive the Jim Coiner Sportsmanship Award, which is given to only one boy and girl in the Valley every year. The award recognizes not only their play, but academic achievement, sportsmanship, curricular activities and community service.

Edwardo Gonzalez, Fatima Verduzco, Pete Sanchez and Tyler Gonzalez who all had winning entries in the Step-Up poster contest. Tyler’s will be placed on a city transit bus.

Springville’s Julie Musson who has organized a special store just for families in need to purchase Christmas gifts at little cost.

Granite High School girls volleyball team and Strathmore High School girls water polo team that were each honored by winning the academic titles for their respective sports. The award is given to the teams with the highest cumulative grade point averages. And, it is the second consecutive year that each team has won the honor.

Monache High’s Trevor Kroutil and Caleb Parnell and Porterville High’s Greg Haas and Logan Deurloo who were all named to the East Yosemite League’s first team in water polo. Also, to all of the other players named to the second team and honorable mention.

Bank of America that recently donated to Helping Hands.

The Sequoia Dutch Oven Club that weathered the rain to cook up a meal for homeless people.

20-Ands who provided food baskets on Thanksgiving to needy families.

Strathmore’s Kayla Holloway, Granite Hills’ Elena Galvez and Lindsay’s Christina Castro, who were all named to the East Sequoia League first team in volleyball.

Porterville High School’s wrestling team that placed 10th out of 77 teams at the El Dorado Tournament and to Mason Pengilly who won the 126-weight title.

The Hume Lake Ranger District staff in Sequoia National Forest for being honored with the regional forester’s award.
