There are many reasons to offer up a cheer this week. Below are a few.


Cheers go out to:

— Monache girls basketball team that not only won another East Yosemite League championship, but finished a third straight perfect EYL season.

— Mt. Whitney Manor in Lindsay that has become a smoke-free living facility.

—  Strathmore girls soccer that began their quest for a Valley championship with a first-round victory and remain one of the top teams in the nation. The girls also captured the East Sequoia League championship.

—  Felix James Miller, 90, and his wife, Shirley Mae Simpson-Miller, 88, who shared their loving story with our readers on Valentine’s Day. The Millers will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on March 11.

—  Reyna Pina, Sabrina Sandoval, Maria Beltran and Natalee Ozuna, all of Porterville High school, who did well at the regional girls wrestling tournament and all qualified for the state tournament.

—  Porterville native Mark Lujan, 11, who won another Silver Gloves championship.

—  Cynthia Gomez, a member of the Tule River Tribe, who was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown a the tribal adviser and executive secretary for the Native American Heritage Commission.

—  Central California Family Crisis Center in Porterville that is bringing awareness to teen dating violence.

—  NASCAR.com that recognized the legacy auto racing has in Porterville with its feature about Dick Brooks, Marv Acton and Dick Meyer.

—  Monache High School grad Chris Ennis who was named as the USAC Rookie of the Year.

—  Paula Patton who has been named the publisher of The Porterville Recorder.

—  All of those volunteers who make the World Ag Expo a successful event and one that pours millions of dollars into the local economy every year.

—  Former President George W. Bush who spoke at the Ag Warriors dinner at World Ag Expo. Ag Warriors is a unique program to help train veterans for careers in agriculture.
