Wildland fire discovered in Solo Peak area

SPRINGVILLE — A wildland fire, called the Solo II fire, was discovered Friday burning near Solo Peak on the border between Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sequoia National Forest and the Tule River Indian Reservation.

The five-acre fire includes three acres are on the reservation and two acres on the forest. The fire started on the reservation and appears to be caused by human activity, the U.S. Forest Service reports.

Investigation is ongoing.

Initially, the reported smoke was thought to have resulted from prescribed burning operations being conducted on the forest or reservation.

The reservation has been burning piles in the Solo Peak area. Forest Service personnel have been prescribed burning in the communities around Camp Nelson.

All of the prescribed burning has been determined to be unrelated to this wildland fire.

Forest Service officials are working in cooperation with Tule River Indian Reservation officials in assessing different options of how best to manage the fire, the Forest Service reports.
