Purple Power at schools offers Teen Dating Violence Awareness

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

A campaign by the Central California Family Crisis Center of Porterville to bring awareness to Teen Dating Violence and Prevention is under way at local high schools.

“Purple Power Wednesdays” at Monache High School and “Purple Fridays” at Granite Hills High School are just two ways that the FCC has involved the students in spreading awareness on the dangers of dating abuse.

The Porterville Family Crisis Center, in cooperation with the City of Porterville and the Porterville Unified School District, has been distributing pamphlets and literature and offering classes on Teen Dating, Violence Awareness and Prevention information to local high school students.

On Wednesday, FCC was at Monache High School. Tonight, they will have a table at the Porterville-Granite Hills high school basketball game.

“Some of the cheer members from both schools will be wearing the Team Violence shirts,” said Krystle Contreras, Outreach Coordinator at Family Crisis Center. “We’ll be passing out literature and pamphlets and wristbands. As an agency, it is one of our goals to prevent violence from happening in our schools, families and community.

The outreach will continue through the month of February, with similar events and speaking engagements planned at the Prospect Education Center, Vine Street High and Citrus High.

FCC will also be present at the Feb. 16 Strathmore High School basketball game.

In addition, a march against violence is being planned by Harmony Magnet Academy for Feb. 25 at Veterans Park. A time has not been set for the event that will be open to all schools and the community.
