Seminar on mandated labor law compliance offered

recorder@portervillerecorder.com

The Porterville Employer Advisory Council, Porterville Chamber of Commerce, Employment Development Department, city of Porterville and Employment Connection are jointly sponsoring an annual seminar for local employers in an effort to provide information critical to their business operations.

The session will cover various labor and case law updates, including new items going into effect this month.

As the legislation varies in impact, depending upon the size of the business, employers with one or more employees are encouraged to attend to gain awareness of the implementation requirements for their business or entity size, organizers said.

The seminar is provided by the sponsors as a way to assist businesses in avoiding potential fines for noncompliance.

Unfortunately, lack of knowledge can be damaging and costly, and does not provide for a valid case in court as reasoning for noncompliance, organizers said.

The seminar will be presented by Doug Larsen of Fishman, Larsen, Goldring and Zeitler, and Sierra HR Partners, an HR consulting firm.

The law practice focuses primarily on employment compliance and litigation. Larsen works with businesses to establish and maintain legally-compliant employment practices and policies, provides training, conducts investigations and defends in litigation asserted by workers. He is a regular presenter to various groups on topics related to employment compliance.

The Labor and Case Law Update seminar is slated to take place from 7:30 to 11 a.m. February 5th at River Island Country Club, 31989 River Island Lane.

Registration includes a full breakfast, the presentation and reference materials.

Cost is $45 for current EAC or Chamber Members, or $65 for non-members.

Deadline to register is Jan. 28. To reserve space, register at the Chamber office, 93 N. Main St., or by calling 784-7502.
