Summit Charter Academy Mathew is on schedule to be a 100 percent dual immersion campus on the 2013-2014 school year.

During a report before the Burton School District Board of Directors, SCA Mathew school principal Timothy Torres-Mofhitz, reported the school registered more than 100 kindergartners for the 2013-2014 school year during its recent kindergarten registration.

“We have enough to fill four classrooms. We have guaranteed spots for 100 and are prepared to open a fifth class if enough interest continues,” he said. “Every day we get one or two more. We would like to open with five classrooms so we’re on our way. If we get 14 more students, we’ll be full.”

An approximate 90 parents, who prefer an English-only program, have transferred their children to Summit Charter Academy Lombardi, reported Lombardi’s principal Treasure Weisenberger. The new, yet-to-be-open school — currently meeting on the Summit Charter Collegiate Academy campus — has an approximate 700 enrolled students. It can accommodate 800.

“We’re not even open yet and we’re already popping at the seams,” Weisenberger said.

The board also commented on Henderson Village, a planned upscale housing development that includes a 23-acre subdivision of homes — specifically a 168-unit apartment complex — on 11 acres near Henderson Avenue and Newcomb Street.

The board and Mekeel said they believed the housing will attract young families, with Mekeel pointing out that the facility should produce an approximate 200 children for several schools within the boundaries of the Burton School District.
