Granite Hills students reportedly caught with edibles on campus

Parents of six Granite Hills High School students were contacted Thursday morning to take their students off campus after the teenagers reportedly provided or consumed baked goods laced with marijuana.

Porterville Unified School District Superintendent John Snavely confirmed the baked goods were either cake or brownies, and were prepared before school began at 8:20 a.m.

The incident occurred before school ended at 12:45 p.m.

“It’s my understanding that the students knew what they were consuming,” Snavely said.

Principal Veryl Ann Duncan confirmed police were involved, but declined to comment further.

As of 2 p.m., school officials could not confirm whether any of the students had been arrested, or had become ill and been hospitalized.

“I’m not aware that any students have gone to the doctor or the hospital,” Snavely said.

When I read the headline, I was prepared to make a snarky comment about kids eating on campus. Then I saw that they were eating pot brownies. Perhaps a better worded headline next time? As for the kids, they need to be expelled or put into a continuation school, obviously a public high school is not the place for them to be.

they won't put the "illegal" part in the headlines...only if it was PHS or MHS. GHHS and the Recorder have quite the alliance. I am surprised it was in there to begin with

I always tell my children that with bad choices come bad consequences, and that there is always right and wrong to choose from. I do believe being expelled and being forced to finish high school at a continuation school would be the appropriate thing to do. That way, other students who might be considering to do something foolish, might think twice about it. There must be serious consequences for these students who broke the law!

Why are good kids stuck with druggies and school bullies? Druggies and school bullies have a constitutional right to an education.
OK we should just expel the brownie kids from school and spend our tax dollars on the kids who want to get an education. I think a wonderful invention is the new on-line k-12 programs that are available. You a student is being bullied by another child who has a constitutional right to their education make them attend on-line classes from home. They can fail from the comfort of their living room and our school district would not be breaking the law by not offering them educational access. It would be cheaper and safer for everyone.
We can offer the same on-line classes for the IEP kids we have in our county. Doing this 1 teacher could teach 30-40 kids on-line rather than 10-12 in the classroom with a teachers aid. Mom and dad can absorb the responsibility of caring for their child like they should be and the IEP child can work at their own pace from the comfort of their own home.
What, you don't read and write English well enough to mainstream. On-line schools work at your own pace. You can get your education from home until you can mainstream well enough to join a regular school. Rosetta Stone is what the military uses right?
There are so many ways to save money, send your ideas to the hopey/changey guy at the White house and see if it gets you anywhere.

There are students suspended at every school everyday (from high school, junior highs as well as elementary schools) for different reasons and it isn't printed in the newspaper. Why does this need to be printed at all? There are so many positive things that happen at ALL the schools that should be covered. Kids make mistakes, kids make BIG mistakes but it doesn't need to be publicized. If I were a parent of one of these students I would be very upset that my child made this poor decision, and even more upset that it was printed in the newspaper. As for whether GHHS has an alliance with the recorder, I seriously doubt this. Do you ever see any suspensions from the other schools reported? No. It seems to me that GHHS gets a lot of negative press. And if anyone were to do some research you will find that there are less suspensions and expulsions from Granite Hills than from any other high school in town. But again, that's not printed either. Anyone who works at a school knows that things like this happen from time to time. Seems to me that if these types of things that happen are "news" then the Recorder is turning into a tabloid.

Not all the kids are druggies and or a bully, my kid was coming out of buying candy. He seen this kid who had a cake, and took a piece of the top layer. Hes not a druggie. Nor are his parents. Coming from the horse mouth that some of the kids didn't even now till after they took a taste. GHHS DONT EVEN CALL PARENTS WHEN THINGs ARE IN TROUBLE WHEN THE PARENTS WHAT TO TALK TO THEM TELL THEY WONT GET BACK. How did this get on campus after all I thought that NO baked goods are to come in to the school. This school officals are not doing thier job at all. If you seen a bunch of kids at school going to eat something you not go and find what it was or see who brought it

Wow. A whole entire slew of braniacs, who have had absolutely no experience in dealing with high school students on a level such as this. Glad none of you run or work in the schools. Then you might get a dose of reality. Beachgrl, you make me laugh. The same "great kids" with excellent grades....... are the same ones that do things like this!!!! You all think this type of thing is going on only with what you would call "losers". You make me laugh at your ignorance of how things actually work. I've worked in education for over ten years. The kid that brought the food will be sent to Success or to Vine street for a semester, and if not a senior, will be back on campus next semester. No matter if they are the valedictorian, or the gang banging "loser" that you would label them. Sorry, in reality, this stuff happens all the time. Guess you have all been out of H.S. for a while, were homeschooled, or just led sheltered lives. Remember..... High school KIDS. This isn't murder or robbery. This is a learning opprotunity, not an opprotunity to label someone and toss them aside, or make them do "online" K -12 education, geesh. If you want to shield your child to the point of social under development...... good for you, that is YOUR right. As for attempting to label students and have an opinion about what they should be forced to do........ Sure am glad you aren't in charge. Many great members of our society today would never have lived up to your criteria for what a good student should be in high school. Oh god, some of you people don't have two brain cells to rub together, yet think you are qualified to pass judgements on our children. Save it for your own kids, and may god help them. Wow. Seriously? Looks like some people have way too much time on their hands. There are plenty of great students at Granite. They are not all druggies and "gangbangers" like the reputation they have been given declares. Talk about their outstanding AP scores and passing rates. Talk about how many students there are actively involved in their community and giving up their time for the benefits of others. Talk about students that play outstanding in sports and manage to get no less than a's and b's in their classes. Don't waste your time giving Granite or any school for that matter a worse off reputation.No one is in the right to judge these students. Thousands of students participate in the use of drugs and thousands more make stupid mistakes. Even adults make mistakes. People shouldn't be scrutinized for their mistakes and more imperative than that, people shouldn't have their mistakes posted for the rest of the world to see. There are important things going on in our community, in the rest of the world and publicizing mediocre things like this is not only a waste of time, but it just goes to show how much the Porterville Recorder is straying from being an actual NEWSPAPER.

First of all i would like to comment on the other comments being made. One of the students that was suspended, has never been in trouble with the school as far as serious crimes.Secondly, he received 220 credits at the end of his junior year and was eligible to graduate at the end of his junior year. He chose to stay his senior year to play sports and try and recieve a scholarship maybe, but that was all brought to an end when the corrupt officials at granite hills conspired to bring those wishes and dreams to an end. These officials have lied and fabricated stories about students because of vengence. This is not the 19th century were blood feuds were used to solve problems. So not all of them belong in a continuation school. Some of them were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
