Students quest for the competition

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

From elementary to high school, Porterville’s technology-savvy students will compete for top honors in a problem-solving academic competition this Saturday.

The event Cyberquest is designed to encourage teams of students, grades three to twelve, to consider complex medicine or public health scenarios, propose solutions and communicate their proposals using a multimedia presentation to a panel of judges and public audience Saturday.

On Nov. 2, team coaches were given access to presentation scenarios, which encouraged students to use their history, science, language arts, drama and math skills to create innovative solutions to the challenges. Teams gather their information from the Internet, magazines, interviews, books, videos and other resources.

Approximately 90 teams are expected to compete in the 11th annual event, run by the Tulare County Office of Education, at the Visalia Convention Center.

Schools in Tulare, Kings and Fresno counties will be represented.

Local competing teams include:

Granite Hills High School: Violette and Dr. Grizz

Harmony Magnet Academy: The Crusaders

St. Anne’s School: The Beat Therapists, Flu Busters, S.T.O.P., St. Anne’s Medical Group, Doctors of History and Harmonic Healers

Westfield Elementary: Health Nuts and Physicians Musicians

Strathmore Middle School: G Force, The Cure and Vaccination Sensation

Those teams judged as the best in their respective categories are awarded trophies and medals.
