Hot August Bikes rolls through Porterville

Annual event raises funds for museum and adult day services

Saturday's sweltering triple-digit weather did not prevent bikers and riders from participating in the 13th annual "Hot August Bikes" at Manente's Sports bar at Lake Success.

"It was one of the smaller crowds we've seen," museum board member Jerry Lynch said. "We had 49 motorcycles and 80 participants register."

Following the registration, the motorcycles drove off for an 80-plus mile run, stopping along the route to pick up playing cards.

"I had the worst [poker] hand but it won me $100.00 so I guess that wasn't so bad," said Marvin Wiesenberger. "It was hot weather - but it was alright. It was pretty much a straight run to Three Rivers. I've participated every year since it started."

Winning the high hand was Cathy Howard.

As the ride concluded, the party continued at Manente's Sports bar with live music, vendors, food, children's activities, and biker games.

One popular game appeared to be the "Wienie Bite" - bikers would drive slowly as they passed under a suspended hotdog on a fork. It was up to the rider to lift herself up and take as big a bite as possible off the hotdog.

"It was a lot harder than I thought it would be," said Melanie Baker after she attempted to bite the hotdog.

It was also her first time on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The feat was finally accomplished by Roberta Thomson, production coordinator of the fundraising event.

"I was the reigning queen for three years in a row," Thomson said. "I didn't do it last year but now I'm back and I'm the returning queen."

As music blared in the background, adults continued with socializing, eating, drinking, and participating in an array of biker games, while children played in a bounce house or slid down a giant inflatable slide that ended with a splash into a pool of water.

"This is our first time at this," said Elizabeth Greenwalt of Springville. "They did a good job putting this together. We're having a blast."

Proceeds from the poker run and show benefited the Porterville Historical Museum and Porterville Adult Day Care Services.
