A 19-year-old Porterville man was shot and killed late Sunday night.

Porterville police said the man was sitting in a car in the parking lot of a Spirit convenience store at 699 S. Plano St. waiting for a friend who was inside the business, when he was approached by two males, one of whom almost immediately pulled out a gun and fired one shot at the 19-year-old, striking him in the chest. The two suspects fled and the victim was taken to the hospital by friends, police said.

At 11:49 p.m., Porterville police officers were dispatched to Sierra View District Hospital with regard to the wounded victim. By the time officers arrived, the man had died as a result of his wounds.

Police said there is no indication that the victim was involved in any gang activity but that it is possible the suspects were.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to contact detective sergeant Ron Moore or detective Harvey Dominguez with the PPD Investigations Unit at 782-7400.
