A special graduation
Students transition to adult program
Dressed in red caps and gowns, 12 special needs students from local school sites transitioned into an adult program on June 2 with a special graduation ceremony held at the L.B. Hill Learning Center.
Walking into the learning center to the music of Pomp and Circumstance, the students smiled and waved to their family, friends, and numerous agency representatives.
The sites where students attended classes were the Porterville Community Based Instruction-1 at the Porterville Sheltered Workshop facility near Porterville Airport; Porterville Community Based Instruction-2 at Porterville Adult School, Porterville College, and at L.B. Hill Learning Center.
“The students in our program remain with us until age 22 years,” said Bob May, administrator, special services, at L.B. Hill Learning Center. “At that time they transition to an adult program.”
In the Porterville area, the areas providing the services are the Porterville Sheltered Workshop and Social Vocational Services.
In addition, the students provided the entertainment — Judy Kaykeo sang and David Herrera performed a dance.
Presentation of Certificates of Completion were made by Tulare County Office of Education Superintendent Jim Vidak and Assistant Superintendent for Special Services Marilyn Rankin.
A reception followed the special commencement exercise.
The 12 students who graduated are: David Herrera, Taylor Wilson, Sandra Brace, Judy Kaykeo, Manuel Munoz, George Santos, Oscar Ramirez, Sheri Johnson, Brenda Correa, Kasia Kowalski, Davy Nonhprasith and Nadia Rafiq Gulam-Hussain.
