Gap between Yes and No votes narrows for Prop. 8

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

Opponent of Proposition 8 gained some ground after midnight Wednesday but the measure remains poised for passage with nearly two-thirds of precincts reporting in across the state.

Nearly 3.56 million voters cast ballots backing the measure to limit same-sex marriage, while 3.24 million cast ballots against the measure.
The totals are based on 62 percent of precincts reporting.

Prop. 8 would add language to the California constitution defining marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

The gap between the Yes and No vote has slowly closed as more and more results are posted statewide.

In early returns Tuesday, the Yes on 8 vote was leading 54 percent to 46 percent. Later in the evening, the Yes vote was leading 53 percent to 47 percent.

Early Wednesday morning, the Yes vote was leading 52 percent to 48 percent.

The Yes on 8 vote maintained blockbuster support in Tulare County, garnering 75 percent of the vote with 196 of 244 precincts reporting early Wednesday morning.
