LINDSAY — J. J. Cairns graduating class of 2010 had plenty to celebrate Thursday night at Lindsay High School. Wearing big smiles across their faces and wearing black and green graduation caps and gowns, 20 of the 35 graduating seniors walked through the school’s gymnasium as Pomp and Circumstance played.

“All of us have had obstacles that got in our way but that didn’t stop us,” said Maria Tapia during her inspirational speech.

Tapia talked about having a baby her junior year and how the baby was not an obstacle — but an inspiration — to finish high school.

“Without an education, you aren’t going anywhere,” she said. “I want to dedicate this moment to all those who did not think I would make it. To them I say, ‘look at me now.’”
Ariel Bulgara echoed the statement.

“Look at us now,” she also said. “We’re on our way to a bigger and better life.”
Guest speaker Scott Braden spoke next.

“As you go through this commencement, this journey will be filled with ups and downs,” he told the class. “But you can’t quit. You finish the race.”

Prior to the presentation of certificates, several students were acknowledged with awards — Quality Producer Award, Selida Figueroa; Well Balanced Learner, Matthew Sanchez; Self Directed Life Long Learner, Sylvia Vigil-Aguilera; Caring and Compassion Person, Oscar Espinoza-Andrade; and the Principal’s Award, Janie Ernest.

Following the presentation of the class, the smiling graduates walked and danced their way out of the gymnasium as Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” blared through the speakers while family and friends cheered, whistled and blew air horns in the crowded gymnasium.

“It’s super exciting. I want to cry but I don’t want to ruin my makeup,” said Ashley Lopez, as she held her 6-month old son, Deon Hurtado-Lopez. “I can’t believe I made it. I’m so happy.”
School principal Dennis Doane praised all of the students for their accomplishments.

“The years of hard work are now behind them, but the memories remain,” he said. “I commend them for not giving up, but staying focused on their goals and their desire to complete their high school education.”
