LINDSAY — There was no question about it.

Guests entering the Lindsay Memorial Building lobby Saturday morning were treated to a true “Winter Wonderland” — a glistening experience — during the 49th annual Lindsay District Hospital Guild Breakfast, Country Store and Raffles, a fundraising event to provide scholarships to Strathmore and Lindsay area youth pursuing a career in a medical field.

The lobby’s walls were covered in blue and white snowflake-designed paper, and dozens of sparkling snowflakes hung from the ceiling — and on 11 fresh Christmas trees — to transform the lobby into a magical place.

In the main room, 32 tables, each seating eight people, sparkled with holiday decorations.

“It is so beautiful,” Lois Todd of Strathmore said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. And the ladies are all so friendly. The tables are gorgeous.”

Each table was unique, elaborately decorated in everything from golds and silvers to purples, reds and blacks.

One table had a Hawaiian theme — a Christmas palm tree and a Santa Clause laying in a hammock — as the centerpiece. Other tables had candles, crystal, wooden figurines and many other holiday themes.

“We each had to come up with our own theme and use our own dishes,” Bobbie Velasquez, table hostess and newly elected hospital board member, said.

Gold and silver sparkles reflected off glass-mirrored squares positioned on Velasquez’s table next to some of her best china and porcelain dishes.

“I went online to get some holiday decorating ideas. I never decorate the table the same way twice. Each year is different,” Velasquez said. “This is such a fun event. People can have fun while supporting a great cause — helping local students going into the medical field. It sets off the Christmas season. It is awesome.”

As people began to find their seats, many others browsed through and dropped raffle-type tickets into small boxes for an opportunity to win one or more of the 26 gift baskets and items on display in the lobby.

Baked goodies were also available for purchase.

Lindsay High School choir members served as table servers.

“Since 1984 we have given away more than $120,000 to Lindsay and Strathmore high school graduates,” Deanna Pettus, treasurer of the guild and master of ceremonies, said at the event. “Last year we gave out $6,400. It is a wonderful event and one that benefits the students in our community.”
