Google Street View Vehicle visits Porterville
A white and green, specially-adapted Google Street View vehicle, complete with large tripod and cameras, could be seen Thursday maneuvering through Porterville streets.
According to the Google website — maps.google.com — the street view was started as an experimental project on five U.S. cities in May 2007. Since then, they have expanded the high-resolution 360-degree panoramic views to include locations on all seven continents.
The latest vehicles have 15 lenses taking 360 degrees of photos. It also has motion sensors to track its position, a hard drive to store data, a small computer running the system, and lasers to capture 3D data to determine distances within the Street View imagery.
