Five Goshen residents were injured early Wednesday morning when they were struck by a vehicle as they walked in a “Celebracion Guadalupana” procession in that tiny community.

Four of those injured were adults, while one child suffered minor injuries. Most of those suffered only minor injuries, but one person, a 19-year-old female, had major injuries, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the CHP, the incident occurred at 4:50 a.m. at Road 58, south of Avenue 308. All five pedestrians were celebrating the religious event, “Celebracion Guadalupana” with approximately 20 other people by walking north on Road 68. The group had no traffic control personnel or flashlights. Each person was carrying a lit candle in front of them but the candles were not visible to the rear.

A 21-year-old Visalia man driving a Pontiac Grand Am was approaching the rear of the group and officer said he was unable to see them in the middle of the road and collided with five of the pedestrians.
