Burton School District fiscally strong

Superintendent-search report to be presented tonight

A final audit report by an independent auditor indicates the Burton School District is fiscally strong, reported Wendy Jones, chief financial officer, to the Burton School District Board of Trustees on Feb. 21. The district ended the 2011-2012 fiscal year well above the 3 percent state recommended reserve.

“There were no findings,” Jones said. “We have budgeted conservatively and ended fiscally strong. We’re currently at 20 percent in our reserve account.”

The only recommendation, which was not a finding, was to deposit money from the associated student body activities in a more timely manner, Jones said.

Also during the meeting, a report and discussion on how to proceed with the recruitment of the district’s new superintendent was tabled to 5 p.m. today.

The board will report on its search, and decide whether or not it will keep the search internal during tonight’s special board meeting.

At a regular January board meeting, trustees moved to interview Sharon Kamberg, the district’s deputy superintendent, during a special open-session board meeting and study session on Feb. 6. The report of those findings will be offered tonight.

In other matters discussed during the Feb. 21 meeting:

- $1,500 was approved to send the Burton Middle School wrestling team to the Northern California Tournament of Champions. Board member Jay Rice addressed the need to increase the wrestling team’s budget and asked it be discussed during the March 7 regular board meeting.

- A $25,000 loan for band uniforms for Summit Charter Collegiate Academy was approved. The loan is to be paid back by the band boosters.

- Student representative Cody Maita reported on activities at Summit Charter Collegiate Academy and talked about a special presentation about the liberty in North Korea at the school.

Tonight’s special board meeting is slated for 5 p.m. in the district’s board room, 264 N. Westwood St.
