The Burton Elementary School District Board of Trustees will meet at 5:15 p.m. today, in lieu of Labor Day Monday, in the Burton School District Board Room, 274 N. Westwood St, for its regular scheduled meeting. On the agenda is everything from meeting with labor negotiators, in closed session, to reporting on the District’s finances and students’ California

Standardized test results. In addition, changes in Preschool and Early Chidhood Education and information on bullying and technology use, an update on the District’s construction projects and reports and announcements from Superintendent Gary Mekeel, are also on the agenda.

The meeting begins at 5:15 p.m., with the Board adjourning to closed session immediately following the opportunity for members of the public to address the board on closed session items.

On the closed session agenda is a conference with a labor negotiator.

“It’s an onging report as we continue to negotiate with the classified and certified union,” said Sharon Kamberg, assistant superintendent, curriculum, Burton School District. “It’s a formality update as we move forward. We’re hopeful and feel we have moved through the process.”

The fight is to obtain the best possible contract and benefit package, she said.

“We’re close to a tentative agreement. Then we can get back to focusing on important things, like educating students,” Kamberg said. “We want to be as fair and as transparent with our budget as possible.”

The Board reconvenes to Open Session at approximately 5:45 and will report on any action that might have been taken during Closed Session.

Following a presentation of how the District’s schools scored on the STAR — Standardized Testing and Reporting — tests, the Board will be asked to adopt a resolution estimating the new Fiscal Year 2012-2013 appropriations limit of $22.3 million, and an actual appropriations limit of $21 .2 million for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

The Preschool and Early Childhood Education changes will reflect that effective Sept. 1, the District will collect fees for services rendered. A sliding family-fee schedule will also be presented.

Presentations on bullying, and on policies for staff and students on technology and social media, will also be presented.
