Labor Day is Free Fishing Day
The California Department of Fish and Game invites the public to celebrate Labor Day by fishing for free in California’s lakes, rivers and oceans.
Labor Day, Sept. 6 is one California’s two Free Fishing Days — the other is July 4 — when residents and nonresidents are allowed to cast their fishing rod without buying a fishing license.
All fishing regulations such as bag size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. All anglers are required to have an appropriate report card if fishing for abalone, steelhead, sturgeon, spiny lobster or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems.
Anglers should also check the rules and regulations for any waters they plan to fish in. Entry fees at lakes or reservoirs may still apply.
