Candidates sought for Cinco de Mayo royalty
Comision Honorifica Mexicana-Americana has kicked off this year’s Cinco De Mayo activities by soliciting candidates for its royalty, grand marshal, parade participants and vendors for the street festival, which is scheduled to take place May 1-5.
Any young girl interested in being a candidate for Cinco de Mayo Royalty can pick up applications at the Comision building on the corner of Date and Plano, Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to noon or call 289-9381 to request an application. Applications can also be obtained from coordinator Rachel Chacon at 359-9031.
There are three categories: Little Miss for ages 5 to 8 years old, Junior Miss for ages 9 to 14 years old and Miss for ages 15 to 19 years old. The qualifications for candidates are that they be single and of Hispanic descent. The Little Miss and Junior Miss will be selected based on tickets sales. Miss selection is based on ticket sales, academics and talent.
All candidates selling more than $200 in tickets will receive 50 percent of the total as a scholarship. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28.
Nominations are also being accepted for grand marshal. Forms can be picked up at the Comision building or by calling 289-9381. The deadline for nominations is also Feb. 28.
Applications for this year’s Cinco De Mayo Parade will be mailed out to prior participants the week of Feb. 18. Anyone interested in participating in the parade can pick up applications at the Comision building and at Ola Raza, Inc., 180 N. Main St. The deadline for applications is April 12.
Vendor packets can also be picked up at the Comision building or by calling Grace Munoz-Rios at 289-9381. All food vendors must have a license to sell.
