Carport damaged after barbecue explosion Friday
Fire units arrived to 1480 W. Chelsea Ave. in Strathmore Friday in response to a structure fire to find the owner had extinguished a barbecue explosion with a garden hose.
Tulare County Fire Department reported that the owner stated he left the barbecue near a wooden carport and when he returned and approached the barbecue, it exploded in flames and began to burn the bottom of the carport.
The owner was able to grab a garden hose and extinguish both fires.
Investigation revealed that the propane tank relief valve apparently failed, allowing propane gas to escape causing the explosion.
The barbecue — valued at $500 — was totally destroyed and there was an estimated $500 worth of fire damage to the bottom of the carport roof.
