Authorities investigating in-custody death at jail

Authorities are investigating Tuesday’s death of an inmate housed in the Tulare County Main Jail.

Correctional deputies responded at 2 a.m. to a call of a man down. Deputies and medical staff members administered first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation until ambulance personnel arrived, the Sheriff’s Department reports.

The inmate was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead.

The incident that led to his death occurred at about 1:05 a.m., authorities report.

Authorities are not releasing the inmate’s name pending family notification. An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

Detectives with the department’s Violent Crimes Unit are handling the investigation.
