PC men's, women's hoops fall
The Porterville College men’s basketball team (0-3) has yet to win its first game of the season, but the young squad is showing advancement with every loss, said coach T.J. Jennings.
“We’ve made strides,” he said. “With 14 freshmen on the team, it’s important to see improvement with every game.”
At the San Diego Tournament on Friday, the Pirates fell to undefeated Cuesta College (4-0), 84-76.
“It was back and forth all night,” Jennings said. “Our largest deficit was 18, but we came back from that.”
The team, however, was never able to narrow the gap to less than six points.
PC had only 15 turnovers on the night, but fell short on rebounds, grabbing just 27 to CC’s 52.
“We’re going to have to step up on rebounds,” Jennings said.
PC had four players score in double-digits. Leading the Pirate crew was Ivory Easley with 23 points. He was 12-of-13 at the free-throw line.
Juddon Carter had 12 points, Tyrone Hall had 11 rebounds and Dominic Avila scored 10.
PC continues the quest for its first win on Sunday against Cypress College.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
MT. SAN JACINTO 92, PC 60
Mt. San Jacinto improved to 3-0 with a physical, up-tempo style against Porterville at the Barstow Tournament. Mt. San Jacinto made 28 free throws while PC made 14. “We didn’t back down,” PC coach Dave Kavern said. “We played hard. We did some good things.”
It was a close game near the end of the first half when Mt. San Jacinto used a technical foul on Kavern and two turnovers to spark a run, allowing it to take a 46-30 halftime lead. Eva Gutierrez scored 15 points, Destiny Zarate had 11 points and Alia Alvarez and Maribel Bravo each added seven points for PC.
