PC men break through for win
The Porterville College men’s basketball team followed up one of its worst shooting games with one of its best and came away with its first victory of the season.
Led by freshman guard Dominic Avila’s career-high 19 points, the Pirates (1-7 Central Valley Conference, 1-18) defeated Columbia 71-55 Wednesday night at home.
Avila was 6-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. As a team, the Pirates shot 56 percent from the field.
PC led the 33-32 at the half.
Three other Pirates scored in double figures — Tyrone Hall had 13 and Miguel Perez and Joseph Yarbrough scored 10 each.
On Saturday against West Hills, the Pirates shot 28 percent from the field.
Columbia fell to 8-13 on the season and 3-5 in conference.

The Porterville College women’s basketball team lost to West Hills-Lemoore 66-58 Wednesday night.
The Pirates trailed 31-28 at the half after jumping out to a 16-6 lead.
It didn’t get much better in the second half for the Pirates as coach Dave Kavern was ejected two minutes in after picking up two technicals.
Porterville (3-4 Central Valley Conference, 6-15) was led by Maribel Bravo with 25 points and Destiny Zarate with 12 points.
