Porterville College sweeps COS

The Porterville College volleyball team moved a step closer to clinching at least second place in the Central Valley Conference by sweeping the College of the Sequoias 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 on Wednesday at PC.

PC coach Dale Henderson said even though his team allowed just 16 points in game one, his team’s play was actually more consistent in game two. “The first game was kind of a roller coaster for us,” Henderson said.

Porterville built an 18-10 lead in game three before COS was able to rally when Henderson was substituting freely. COS closed to within 21-17 when Allison Clem made an outstanding save that landed on the Giants’ side for a point and Amanda Monge followed with a kill as PC (10-1 in the CVC) went back up 24-17. COS closed to within 24-22 before the Pirates put the match away.

Overall, Henderson said his team’s play was solid. “It’s what we expected,” he said.

Monge now ranks second in the state in kills and added to her total with 15 kills and also had three digs, one block and four aces. Also for PC, Nayeli Colunga had nine kills, 14 digs and three aces, Clem had eight kills, 11 digs, two blocks, one assist and one ace, Sam Sawyer had 31 assists and one kill and Kacey Markarian added 16 digs.
