Unique flavors aplenty at Springville Ranch 'market'

Schedule: Farmer's markets scheduled through December.

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

SPRINGVILLE — Near inimitable flavors stood out at the Springville Farmer’s Market this weekend.

There were ears of corn, baskets of plums and pales of oranges. Then there were cinnamon glazed almonds, mint jelly, jalapeno pistachios, pickled okra and “Lotsa Pepper Jam.”

They were marketed next to hand-sewn quilts and hand-crafted jewelry, grass-fed beef and potted plants at the second farmer’s market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Springville Ranch.

The first market Aug. 8 drew hundreds, and has sparked a forthcoming monthly tradition.

“I got tons and tons of calls,” Brooke Holvey, marketing manager of Springville Ranch, said. “People wanted another one.”

Future farmer’s markets are scheduled for Sept. 19, Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and an undetermined date in December at 36400 Highway 190, according to Holvey.

There were 22 vendors Saturday, and the parking lot and side roads were packed with vehicles.

Christy Costa, from California Hot Springs, made a go at selling her baked goods for the first time. She packaged her treats and cooked bruschetta pizza in a toaster oven.

“I thought it’d be fun,” she said. “I wanted to be a part of supporting the community and keeping money local.”

Many shoppers were lured by the local produce.

“You get to see your neighbors out here,” Springville resident Laura Linton said.

She bought apples, tomatoes, honey and bell peppers.

For visitor Jeannine Sailor of Camp Nelson, the farmer’s market gave her something to do.

“I think it’s wonderful to have something so close to home,” she said after stopping by the airbrush tattoo tent.
