Reed to receive Distinguished Alumni award

Gary Reed has been chosen to receive the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award during the Porterville College Athletic Hall of Fame banquet to be held Saturday, March 10 at River Island.

The Porterville College Athletic and Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Committee chose Reed for the award. Ted Ensslin was the inaugural winner of the award in 2011. Reed will be honored along with two athletes who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the March 10 banquet. The athletes who will be inducted will be announced soon.

Reed is recognized as a community leader, businessman and friend of education. He attended Porterville College serving in several campus student groups and graduated in 1966 with an A.A. in Business Administration.

He received his bachelor’s from Fresno State in 1969. Throughout the 1970s he served as an educator at all levels from K-12 through college. In Ventura County he received several recognitions including Outstanding Educator of the Year in 1975.

He left his career path to return to Porterville in late 1970s to assist his father managing Reed & Reed Enterprises. He also served on the Porterville Planning Commission and in other community services.

By 1979 he completed his master’s School Management from the University of La Verne. During the 1980s, Reed served on the Tulare County Retirement and Pension Board, Sierra View District Hospital Board, Tulare County Board of Supervisors, as Director of Porterville Fair, Cal State Bakersfield Advisory Board, Porterville Education Foundation, Porterville Chamber of Commerce and in numerous other community roles. He was chosen as the Porterville Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1986.

In 1993 he partnered with Mark Shoemaker to form an investment brokerage business which expanded into a multimillion dollar concern representing clients nationwide.

He assisted in developing a master’s program at PC in cooperation with the University of La Verne. He has been appointed by California Governors George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger to various boards and commissions, including the Commission of Teacher Credentialing and most recently to the Board of Governors for Community Colleges, as one of the few members representing a rural region.

Reed has served with great distinction from the classroom to the halls of the state capitals.
