First Congregational New Year’s events


The First Congregational Church will celebrate New Year’s Day with communion and a recommitment service led by pastor John Eby.

There will be a showing of the director’s copy of “The Epic of Love” and the award presentations of Holy Wood Productions at 6 p.m on Friday, Jan. 6. A light meal of theater lobby type food will be served.

A celebration of Epiphany will be observed Friday, Jan. 6, the traditional time that the arrival of the wise men is celebrated. This year the event will be commemorated by a drama, “A Virtual Christmas,” directed by Bill Jameson.

Worship services begin at 10:30 a.m., Sunday school classes for children and adults begin at 9:30 a.m.

Celebrate recovery BBQ is Tuesday


A Celebrate Recovery barbecue will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westfield Christian Church, 1222 N. Prospect St.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12-step program and is open to anyone who struggles with any kind of hurt, habit or hang-up. There are large group meetings as well as share groups that gather to allow Christ to guide them through the recovery process. The group meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday.

A children’s program is available at the same time for children of parents who are involved in Celebrate Recovery. The regular weekly meeting will take place after the barbecue at 6:30 p.m.

The cost for the barbecue is $3.50.

Safety first service at Unitarian Sunday

The Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Porterville, will be covering good safety practices at their meeting  at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The church is located at Fourth Street and Harrison Avenue.

Good safety practices are important and cost effective. What’s more, our insurance bases our premiums on compliance with reasonable application of these rules. No host—bring your own snacks!

Growth, recovery classes at Church
of the Nazarene


Resources for personal growth and recovery classes to be offered. All sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012  at the Porterville Church of the Nazarene, located at 2005 W. Olive Ave.

Sessions are open to men and women. The last day to enroll is Sunday, Jan. 8. There is limited enrollment for each class. The cost for materials is $25 per participant, per class.

There will be an Anger Management class. Dr. Elizabeth Jackson will facilitate 14 sessions on how to manage anger with the interactive resource, The Anger Workbook.

Boundaries  will be another class. Kristy Johnson, MA. IMFT, will lead seven sessions on developing appropriate life boundaries: “When to say yes and when to say no.”

Divorce Recovery will be the third class offered. Lachele Edwards, MA., will facilitate nine sessions utilizing the resource, A Time for Healing: Coming to Terms with Your Divorce.

Caring and sharing for less fortunate


The children and adults from the Church of Christ at 1000 N. Newcomb St. have been contributing to the Caring and Sharing program every Sunday morning for the last six months. The contributions made are being used to help two families that are less fortunate during this Christmas season. This spirit of giving goes on throughout the year as the children give to a special need every six months.
